One sign that Jesus is the Messiah or Christ, meaning the Anointed One, is a prophecy in Daniel, which gives the timing of Christ's coming. This revelation of the timing of the Messiah's coming was given to Daniel when he, with the Jews, was in captivity in Babylon after Jerusalem and the temple had been destroyed. The prophecy is Daniel 9:25: from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks and threescore and two weeks. As the word translated ‘week’ literally means seven, this number adds up to 483.
Soon after this revelation was given to Daniel, King Cyrus issued a decree to rebuild Jerusalem with its temple (Ezra 1:1-4). Although historical records differ from each other by about 100 years when giving the time from Cyrus to Christ, a figure of 483 years from Cyrus' decree until Christ is within their range. The first seven sevens or 49 years probably refer to the time to rebuild the temple, and the next sixty-two sevens or 434 years to the time from then to Christ. It is logical to believe that a seven refers to seven years rather than seven days or seven weeks or seven months, if for no other reason than that Christ did not come after these shorter time intervals.
So the timing of Jesus' coming agrees with the prophetic record in Daniel and the Jews are wrong to be still waiting for the first appearing of the Messiah.
